You can argue that quilting is essentially sewing, but the best quilting sewing machine helps a lot. It makes layer stitching much more manageable, and you get more strength on each stitch. Quilting mimics hand stitches, so your designs appear more authentic as well.

There is a lot more feature to this futuristic product that will blow your mind and make you wonder why you have not invested in the product yet. So, to read more about quilting machines keep reading.

Why Get a Special Machine For Quilting?

There is no doubt that hand quilts are mesmerizing. Often people quilt by hand as a passion project. But unless you are making a small quilt, you almost always need a machine quilter for a king-sized bed or a curtain.

The apparent need while quilting a more significant project is to get as much speed as possible. Unless you decide to undertake a long-term hand quilting project, there is no defying the speed of a quilting machine. These machines can stitch up to 1500 times every minute.

The Proportions

While quilting, you need a different set of feet, machine throat, and extension table entirely. Since you need to layer, the throat should be more extensive, and the machine should be bigger. Moreover, most quilting devices have extension tables, which also helps.

You also get flexibility while using different foot styles for various projects. So, as you could move your hand in any way to adjust with the pattern, now you can do the same with these machines and get the added benefit of variation and speed.

When you are stitching with your hands, you can make any pattern you want. You have to learn and practice those patterns, of course. However, with new systems and improvements, quilting machines have come a long way.

Some people or the average customer can barely tell the difference between hand quilts and machine quilts. That is because these machines now have a plethora of stitches. You can even work on more complicated fabrics such as silk and satin with these stitches.

Ease of Use

Since you are reading this article, we will assume that you stitch and know all the mechanics about it. So, you will also agree when we say that hand-stitching is a tedious task. Getting hand-cramps is not difficult, either.

However, with a machine, you can work for as long as you can. With lighting speed stitches and a hearty motor, you can finish a big project half-way through in one sitting. Even regular sewing machines will have a hard time doing that.

There are pressure adjustment and tension adjustment systems to help you power through the variable thickness. So, the fabric will not bunch up while stitching. You also get a unique knee lifter that keeps both your hands available while adjusting.

What to Look for in a Quilting Sewing Machine?

Now that we have tackled the list of quilting devices, it is time you know about each factor separately, and why it is essential.

Stitch Styles

If you were to quilt with your hands, then you could make whatever design your mind conjures. However, for a machine that is not possible. Which is why manufacturers have to pre-program the devices with built-in stitches.

Hence, with a push of a button, the machine can produce that design. Now the more options and styles you get, the better. For that reason, we suggest the Singer Quantum Stylist 9960. It has 600 in-built stitches that will give you full freedom.

Quilting sewing machines need many features and functions. Hence it becomes difficult for manufacturers to cut down on the cost. So, if you are looking for extremely affordable ways, you can always work with a regular sewing machine.

We have a separate segment below to help you figure out how to use a regular sewing machine as a quilting device. However, the XR3774 model by Brother is an incredibly affordable option.

Rate of Output

We use machines to finish chores that would otherwise take ages. So, if a quilting machine cannot stitch fast enough, it is not worth it. A standard quilting machine should be able to make at least 600 stitches per minute. However, the number can be much higher.

So, if you are a busy sewist looking for a machine that has lightning speed, then we recommend the PQ1500SL model by Brother. It has an SPM of 1500.

Sewing requires precision and accuracy. So, always look for extended tables on your quilting machine. It will provide more space to work and stable ground. However, the motor is bound to create some vibration.

So, if the machine has a robust body, it can subdue the weight. That is why we suggest Singer Quantum Stylist 9960 as it has a heavy-duty metal frame body.

How to Set a Sewing Machine for Quilting?

A small piece of advice is that you can use your sewing machine for quilting anytime you want. So, if you are on a budget, or you do not have a quilting machine at your current place, then use a sewing machine without hesitation. However, you do need to follow a few steps.

Set the Thread and Bobbin

You have to load the bobbin and insert the thread through the needle eye, as you would do with another sewing machine. If you want your top and bottom stitch to match, then do not forget to use the same color thread to load the bobbin and the main thread bundle.

Make Sure the Parts are Oiled

Since quilting involves working with layers, you need to make sure that all parts are lubricated. On a quilting machine, different systems would take care of this aspect, but since you are using a regular sewing machine, you need to oil every part yourself.

Be Space Cautious

As we have mentioned about this factor several times, you need an ample amount of space when you are quilting. So, bring your extension table, adjust them with the sewing machine, and make sure that you place the product in a stable place.

Install a Darning Foot

Since you work with thick fabric while quilting, a regular sewing foot will not work. It will get jammed every once in a while and either tear the material or the thread. So, to power through the thick cloth, install an additional darning foot. A hopping foot or a free-motion foot will also work for quilting.

Be Wary about the Speed

We know that a quilting machine can stitch somewhere between 800 to 1500 times per minute. But do not attempt that speed on a regular sewing machine even if you can. Begin by lowering the pace and make sure you can keep the layers in control.

Once you start getting comfortable, only then you should increase the speed. Also, the pace is totally up to you. Hence in a way, you get variable rate while using regular sewing machines.

Adjust the Feed Dog

If we have not stressed this enough, we will repeat that it is tough to work on layers. So, to gather the layers comfortably, you must lower the feed dog.

If there is too much space between the needle and the presser foot, then the layers will eventually fall off. When you lower the feed dog, it keeps the fabric snug, and it becomes easier to sew.

Size Matters

Your quilting will look sappy and loose if the length of each stitch is too long. It will create more significant gaps between each stitch and cause the fabric to bunch up in-between layers.

So, make sure the length is not too big and control the size with your hand speed. That way, the cloth will move smoothly under the needle.

Thread Cutter and Fixed Stitch

The thread cutter is an excellent feature for patchwork, but while quilting on a sewing machine, it can be a nuisance. So, remember to disable the thread cutter, and while you are at it, stop the fix stitch as well. Doing so will prevent you from forming thread knots.

Adjust the tension

Do not dive in with the main project right away. After you have completed all the steps as mentioned above, use a sample piece to check whether the strain is optimum. If you feel like the sample piece is moving smoothly, only then start working on the actual project.

Quilting Machine Maintenance

A quilting machine has numerous small elements inside it, as well as outside. Notice how the product starts wearing off after a while? That is because the motor faces resistance from external build-up. So, to keep the output optimum, and to get the best use out of your quilting machine, follow these steps.

Covering is Caring

The simplest way to keep your quilting machine clean is to cover it up after every use. So, while your away, micro dust particles cannot settle on top of the product. There are numerous holes on a sewing machine through which dust can enter.

It can disrupt the performance of the motor. But if you cover it up correctly, you can inhibit the build-up of dirt and dust.

Thorough Cleanse

Even after you cover the product, some dust particles will inevitably enter the interior surface. Over time it will build-up. Moreover, micro-fibers from heavy quilting material stays right on top of the foot and below the needle.

Those micro-fibers can easily enter the machine. So, to prevent the accumulation, dust the machine lightly with a synthetic duster. Thoroughly clean the machine every three months if possible.

Sewing Speed

High-speed sewing is fascinating, and it can help you complete the work quicker. However, you must start with a low setting to test if the material can handle the speed. You also need to adjust with speed. Otherwise, the layers will bunch up and eventually cause a mess.

Keep things Smooth

As mentioned earlier, there are several bits and pieces inside a sewing machine. Most of the time, these pieces have some amount of iron and steel in them. So, those pieces can quickly form rust over time and cause an occasional jam.

This phenomenon can scratch the fabric or jam the needle. To avoid that, use a few drops of oil from time to time to keep the joints lubricated. It will restrain rust-formation and keep things running.

Needle Strength

Over time, the needle gets blunt, and it takes more strength to punch through the material, especially when it is thick. It eventually drains out the motor and decreases the durability of the sewing machine. So, it would help if you changed the needle regularly.

Use Right Parts

Sewing machines have several accessories and add-ons. Some brands provide their line of add-ons, some do not. If the device and the accessories are from the same brand, then you do not have to worry.

However, if you are buying these tools separately, do check whether they fit correctly and if the sewing machine can support the accessory. Otherwise, forceful addition can cause more harm than good. Eventually, the part will break apart and disrupt the device.

Lint Problem

If you are quilting, it means you are mostly working with wool and thermal fabric. Woolen fabric sheds quickly and can leave a lot of lint behind. These are moderate pieces of fiber that can easily jam the needle feed or bobbin holder. So, clean those areas regularly to keep things smooth.

Quilting Sewing Machine vs Regular Sewing Machine

Many people often wonder whether they can use a regular sewing machine for quilting. To answer that question, yes, you can sew quilts using a regular sewing machine. But it will incur extra cost and effort. So, to understand a more definite difference between the two types of sewing machines, let us check the following segment.

Machine Throat

The throat width of a quilting sewing machine is crucial. A wider throat indicates that it can hold more layers and prepare them for sewing. So, the longer the length of the device, the wider will be the throat.

You will generally find more significant machine throats on a quilting machine. Since regular sewing machines are for patchwork, they do not need that feature. So you do not get the comfort of neatly arranged layers while quilting with a regular sewing machine.

Presser Foot

Since you quilt on thick fabric or layer the material until it reaches substantial dimensions, the presser foot needs to adjust with that. An ideal presser foot for quilting is the walking foot or a jumping foot.

These tools can punch through thick material as the foot moves with the needle. Hence they are excellent for thick or slippery fabric. Quilting machines generally come with multiple feet extension. So based on your need, you can interchange.

However, you can to install a walking foot on a regular sewing machine if you wish to quilt with it.

Power and Strength

Standard quilting machines are automated and electronic. So, they can grind for a more extended period and provide more output. The exterior is also suitable for quilting. Moreover, some brands offer unique systems that let you clean the device automatically.

So, although you can quilt with a regular sewing machine, the output will not be the same. It will take you more time than usual and also drain the durability of the sewing machine. Moreover, you do not get much space for quilting on a regular sewing machine, either.

It is not new information that quilting machines offer a high rate and accuracy. Although we advise that you start slow, no matter how much speed you can obtain.

In that sense, a regular sewing machine works fine. But in the long run, it falls short against the capability of quilting sewing machines. Moreover, you get various built-in stitches other features that are not present in any regular sewing machine.
